Top high school students honor "Star" teachers each year

Time Warner Cable offers a Star Teacher Recognition Program to the Carteret County Public School System. A top senior at each of the county's three high schools is asked to select and recognize their "Star Teacher," the one who had the greatest impact on his or her education. Time Warner then presents each “Star Teacher” and student with a gift. The students and teachers also attend a Board of Education meeting where the students share the reasons for their selection. This year's students and their Star Teachers were:Croatan High School * Student Courtney Grafton and Teacher David PerryEast Carteret High School * Student John Haught and Teacher Barbara WatersWest Carteret High School * Student Kelly Lindquist and Teacher Becky Ackert.

Six seniors selected as Teaching Fellows

Six Carteret County Public School System seniors are 2008 recipients of North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarships. The Teaching Fellows Program provides a $6,500-per-year scholarship for four years to 400 outstanding North Carolina high school seniors.Students recognized were: David Brinn Roach of Croatan High School; Peter Thomas Carraway, Katlin Amanda Curtis, Nicki Danielle Daniels and James Matthew Joyner of East Carteret High School; and Reba Anna Schmidt of West Carteret High School.Sponsored by the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission, the program was created in the General Assembly in 1986. It has become one of the top teacher recruiting programs in the country. The program identifies academically talented students interested in teaching and provides loans for college. The students "repay" the loans by teaching at least four years in a North Carolina public school. Each year thousands of North Carolina high school seniors compete for the 400 scholarships.

Mnephonics and Secret Stories- Making Learning Fun!

Who said learning has to be boring?  In an effort to ensure that all students in K-2 have a good reading foundation, Craven County Schools has implemented the use of Mnephonics and Secret Stories to help students connect sounds to letter symbols. Both Mnephonics and Secret Stories are brain-based/multi-modality approaches which provide young students with the basics needed to begin the reading process.

Mnephonics, a tool for accelerating reading and writing, was designed by Alisha Das, an ESL lead teacher from Harnett County. Alisha has used her knowledge of how children learn to put together a system of promoting phonological awareness that works, not only for ESL students, but for others, as well. In Mnephonics, each letter is introduced with a picture, a story and an action. Teachers bring in materials to help with the “acting out” of each story. Eventually teachers only need to demonstrate the action as a reminder to students and they remember the sound and letter.

Secret Stories, created by Katie Garner, is also being used in Craven County.  Secret Stories encourages teachers to apply a “dramatic creativity” to teaching the sounds of letter combinations not introduced in Mnephonics. The “secret stories” used to introduce sounds leave students on the edge of their seats and begging for more!

Mnephonics and Secret Stories make learning so much fun, it’s almost impossible not to learn!!!!
